The Mustang is a horse native to the U.S., so we reached out to Kenny Pheasant to give her a native name. Kenny is Anishinaabe and belongs to the Wiikwemkoong First Nation. A small group gathered for the naming ceremony. Kenny said after seeking, he knew what her name would be and she confirmed that when he met her. This was such a rich experience, and we are so grateful to Kenny for his investment in the foundation horse for the new Veterans & Mustangs program. “Wiingash” translated means “Sweet Grass” which is one our four sacred medicines and represents the northern direction, and the white color on the medicine wheel. It symbolizes healing and peace. The needs of that rests in the body, brain and nervous system. Peace Ranch is uniquely suited to address trauma needs: the natural setting and the neurobiology of horses creates ‘regulation in the body. Relationships are repaired and strengthened. This is critical; relationship (connection) is a key element for healing and a protective factor against relapse. Retreats will provide: these populations all have something in common. They all suffer with trauma and the resulting isolation. Traditional strategies are limited in addressing a problem. Large ‘doses’ of nervous system reset. Target the body and nervous system with sensory activities, movement, rhythm and 1:1 time with the horses. Nineteen children, and two adults were senselessly gunned down by an 18 year old (who was also a casualty) the day before this picture was taken. It was after Tuesday that age old wisdom struck me recently. Tuesday, a group of young families, children, parents, grandparents and teachers came to Peace Ranch to celebrate and support sensory learning in young kids with development delays. Why? Because sowing healthy seeds in their lives now will produce a significant harvest in their future. Many of the parents shared special things about what happened for them. At Peace Ranch they felt safe, judgement free, relaxed, and were able to enjoy engaging with their children. Some kids had never been with other kids. Others had never been on grass. The staff was deeply touched seeing their student’s vitality, exploring, smiling, and playing- like other kids. No one imagines tragedy like what happened on May 24th and hindsight IS 2020—apparently no one responded to the cries of this troubled teen, who was a little boy once. It reminded me that no matter what, we must keep sowing seeds of hope and healing, especially planting in young lives AND we need to support families so kids can grow healthy and strong. I remember when our kids were young, bringing in bushels of fruit and vegetables for freezing and canning to preserve them for the coming winter. Harvest is work, the result of good seed sown plus watering and tending to promote healthy growth toward maturity. This process is at work in our clients, our lives as a team, and in Peace Ranch as an organization. So much harvesting is happening in the garden of lives. Raising six children on one salary was challenging but, by the grace of God we never lacked for anything. Our needs were met as we diligently preserved what we had. Nature Deficit Disorder - a newer diagnosis especially in children is based on the belief that spending less time outdoors results in a wide range of developmental and behavioral issues. Though it has not yet made its way into mainline psychology, organizations like United Way of NW Michigan have made this growing concern a priority. Sporte This year Erwin Sporte moved to his final resting place in Heaven. Mr. Sporte came to Peace Ranch as a volunteer in 2011, he was 89 years old. Erwin was a retired business man whose wife had passed and had no family. He adopted the ranch and we all became family. Erwin was an inspiration to all he knew. He was upbeat, positive, and really sharp. He was great with kids and old folks and everyone in between. On hot days, or snowy days, Erwin was there helping to do what he could and NEVER complained.
